Small-capacity commuter

Cheap to run and built to a price. The upgrades that matter are the ones that keep you visible, dry and on the road.

This list shows every upgrade that can apply to the class, including the ones that only make sense in specific conditions — auxiliary fuel for remote riding, heated gear for cold, a lowering kit for a short rider. The planner filters them down to your riding; this page is the full menu.

Stage 1Before your next ride

Cheap, reversible, mostly hand tools. Do all of these before spending on anything in stage 2; several of them are free.

  • Set rider sag and preload for your weight

    Suspension & handling$0–$40 · ~1 h to fit

    A tape measure, a helper and the preload adjusters the bike already has.

    Bikes are sprung for a nominal 75–80 kg rider in nothing but leathers. Set sag first and half the complaints about a bike diving, wallowing or running out of travel go away for free — and you learn whether the springs are actually wrong before you buy any.

    • Static and rider sag targets from the service manual, not a forum
    • How much preload range is left before the adjuster bottoms out
    • Whether the shock has a remote hydraulic adjuster (loaded settings become a 10-second job)

  • Tyres chosen for the surface you actually ride

    Tyres, wheels & brakes$150–$500 · ~2 h to fit

    A tyre pair matched to your real road/dirt split, in the load and speed rating the bike needs.

    The single biggest change you can make to how a bike steers, grips and stops, and the only upgrade you are forced to buy anyway. Most riders run a 50/50 tyre for a 90/10 life, or a sport tyre through a winter.

    • Load index and speed rating at least what the manual specifies, especially two-up
    • Tube or tubeless construction, and whether the rear is available in your size
    • Honest split: knobblies wear out in 3,000 km of tarmac and steer badly in the wet

  • Wrap-around hand guards

    Protection & crash damage$40–$180 · ~1 h to fit

    Alloy-bar guards bolted to the bar end and clamp, with plastic shells.

    They protect the levers and your knuckles in a fall and from branches, and they cut windchill and rain on the road. A snapped clutch lever is a walk home; a bar guard is $60.

    • Bar-end bolt or plug, and inner bar diameter for the insert
    • Clearance to the tank, fairing and switchgear at full lock
    • Handlebar-mounted mirrors and heated grip wiring often need rerouting

  • Frame sliders and axle sliders

    Protection & crash damage$60–$220 · ~1 h to fit

    Delrin or nylon pucks on frame and axle mounts that slide instead of digging in.

    The cheapest way to keep a low-side to plastics and a lever instead of a case, a radiator and a fork leg.

    • Cut-out or no-cut mounts, and whether the fairing needs drilling
    • Bolt grade and length: a slider is only as good as what it bolts through

  • Handlebar swap and risers

    Ergonomics & comfort$40–$250 · ~2 h to fit

    A bar with different rise, sweep and width, or 20–50 mm risers on the stock bar.

    Fixes the standing position on a dirt bike and the wrist and shoulder ache on a road bike, for less than the price of a tyre. It is the first thing to try for a tall rider.

    Check before you order

    • Cable, hose and loom length — brake hoses are the usual limit at full lock
    • Bar diameter (22 vs 28.6 mm) and whether your controls and guards fit it
    • Clearance to the screen, tank and fairing at full lock

  • Wide footpegs, lowered pegs and adjustable levers

    Ergonomics & comfort$70–$300 · ~2 h to fit

    Wider, sharper-toothed footpegs, a lowering bracket where legroom is short, and span-adjustable brake and clutch levers.

    Wide pegs stop your boot slipping and take the fatigue out of standing; 20 mm of peg drop opens up a cramped riding position more than a bar change; a lever you can actually reach with two fingers is a braking upgrade.

    • Lowered pegs move the brake pedal and shifter too — both need re-setting
    • Cornering clearance on a road bike: pegs that hang lower touch down earlier
    • Folding pegs with a proper stop, so they do not fold under your boot

  • Heated grips

    Ergonomics & comfort$60–$200 · ~2 h to fit

    Bonded grips or under-grip elements with a switched controller, wired to a fused, ignition-switched feed.

    Cold hands are a safety problem before they are a comfort problem, and grips extend the riding year at both ends more cheaply than any garment.

    Check before you order

    • Charging headroom at idle, especially with other accessories fitted
    • Grip diameter and whether bar guards still fit over the elements
    • A controller with a low-voltage cut-out, so it cannot flatten the battery

  • Rack plus soft luggage

    Luggage & load carrying$200–$900 · ~2 h to fit

    A tail rack or pannier frames carrying dry bags and soft throw-overs, strapped rather than latched.

    Lighter and cheaper than hard cases, does not break your leg in a fall, and a torn bag is repairable with tape. Off-road it is the right answer at almost any budget.

    Check before you order

    • Subframe load rating — the number the manual gives, not what the rack can hold
    • Heat shielding between bags and exhaust or pipe
    • Bags must not touch the tyre when the suspension compresses fully

  • Tank bag and cockpit storage

    Luggage & load carrying$60–$250 · ~1 h to fit

    A magnetic, strap or lock-ring tank bag, plus a small bar or fork bag for what you need while moving.

    Documents, phone, snacks and a tyre gauge where you can reach them without stopping. Weight this far forward barely affects handling.

    • Plastic or alloy tanks need straps or a lock ring, not magnets
    • It must not block the bars at full lock or your view of the dash

  • Auxiliary fuel cans or bladder

    Fuel range$40–$200 · ~1 h to fit

    A 5–10 litre bladder or approved can, mounted low and carried only on the legs that need it.

    One tenth the price of a big tank, carried only when the next fuel is 400 km away, and the bike handles normally the rest of the year.

    Check before you order

    • Mount it low and never on the pillion seat if you can avoid it
    • Bladders must be an approved fuel type and protected from abrasion
    • Airline and ferry rules on carrying empty fuel containers

  • Brake-light modulator and rear conspicuity

    Lighting & visibility$30–$150 · ~1 h to fit

    An LED tail-light or modulator that flashes briefly on braking, plus reflective tape on the panniers, rims and fork.

    Being rear-ended in traffic is a top-three urban crash, and the cheapest countermeasure on the whole bike is a light that gets noticed and tape that gets seen in a headlight.

    • Modulator legality varies by market — some allow flashing only above a certain rate
    • LED tail lights can confuse older bulb-monitor circuits

  • Louder horn

    Lighting & visibility$25–$120 · ~1 h to fit

    A twin-tone or air horn on a relay, so the current is not going through the stock switch.

    The stock horn on most bikes cannot be heard inside a car with the windows up. It is $40 to fix that.

    • Mounting point with airflow and no water trap
    • Relay it: the stock wiring cannot carry an air horn

  • Fused accessory block with USB

    Electrics & charging$30–$180 · ~3 h to fit

    A small fuse block fed from the battery through a relay triggered by an ignition-switched circuit, with USB and a powerlet outlet.

    One place to hang lights, heated kit, a GPS and a compressor, each individually fused, nothing draining the battery with the key out, and no more spliced-into-the-tail-light wiring.

    Check before you order

    • Total accessory draw against what the alternator makes at idle
    • A dry mounting spot with strain-relieved wiring away from the steering head
    • Trigger the relay from a low-current circuit, not the headlight feed

  • Voltmeter and a tender lead

    Electrics & charging$20–$90 · ~1 h to fit

    A dash or bar voltmeter, plus a permanently fitted pigtail for a smart charger.

    A charging fault shows up as a falling voltage days before it strands you, and a bike that lives outside stays healthy on a tender for the price of one battery.

  • Navigation mount and powered cradle

    Electrics & charging$40–$200 · ~1 h to fit

    A vibration-damped mount on the bar clamp or a frame bracket, with a switched, fused power lead.

    Phones die from vibration on a bar clamp, and a phone on a dying battery is a navigation failure at the worst moment.

    Check before you order

    • Mount off the bar clamp or a solid bracket, not mid-bar, and damped on a single-cylinder bike
    • It must not obstruct the dash or the bars at full lock

  • Fastener audit and thread-lock

    Reliability & longevity$10–$80 · ~3 h to fit

    A torque wrench, the manual's torque table, medium-strength thread-lock and an evening.

    Half of all roadside failures are something that vibrated loose: subframe bolts, sprocket nuts, bar clamps, exhaust flanges, spokes. It costs the price of a bottle of thread-lock.

    • Paint-mark critical fasteners so a loose one is visible at a glance

  • Fluids and filters baseline

    Reliability & longevity$60–$250 · ~3 h to fit

    Engine oil and filter, brake fluid, coolant, air filter and fuel filter, all replaced to a known date regardless of what the seller said.

    On a used bike this is the cheapest way to reset the unknowns, and brake fluid and coolant are the two nobody ever changes.

    • Grades and quantities from the bike's own manual — never the brand default
    • Off-road bikes need a foam-filter service kit and a spare filter, not just a new one

  • Buy the wear parts while they still exist

    Reliability & longevity$100–$600

    A shelf-stock set of the parts that end a trip and are model-specific: levers, cables, filters, gaskets, a chain, bearings, and any plastic that is unique to your bike.

    On an out-of-production model the constraint is supply, not money. The parts that are hard to find in five years are the cheap ones nobody stockpiled, and buying them now costs the same as buying them later — except they exist.

    Check before you order

    • Cross-reference part numbers with the bikes your model shares parts with; the shared parts are the safe ones to buy later
    • Rubber and plastic have a shelf life — buy seals and hoses to use, not to hoard for a decade

  • Air filter and intake service

    Power & fuelling$30–$150 · ~1 h to fit

    A high-flow or correctly serviced filter, a clean airbox, and the snorkel or lid left alone unless the fuelling is being changed with it.

    A clogged filter costs real power and economy, and on a dirt bike it is the difference between an engine that lasts 200 hours and one that lasts 60. Removing an airbox lid without touching the fuelling usually makes the bike worse, not faster.

    Check before you order

    • Foam filters need oiling correctly; a dry foam filter passes dust straight through
    • Do not open up the intake unless the fuelling can be adjusted to match

  • Shorter gearing

    Power & fuelling$70–$220 · ~2 h to fit

    One tooth down at the front or two up at the rear, and a chain adjusted or replaced to suit.

    The cheapest usable performance change there is: the bike feels considerably stronger everywhere you actually ride it, for the price of a sprocket.

    Trade-off: Higher cruising revs, worse economy, and more heat on a long highway leg.

    • Chain length and adjuster range
    • Highway revs and fuel range both get worse — the reason to do the sums before the trip, not after
    • Speedometer error, and on some bikes traction-control calibration

Stage 2The money upgrades

Where the bike actually changes character. Bigger spend, still a home-garage job on most bikes.

  • Rear spring rated for the weight you actually carry

    Suspension & handling$120–$320 · ~3 h to fit

    A stiffer main spring on the existing shock, chosen for rider plus pillion plus luggage rather than for the solo rider the factory assumed.

    Preload alone cannot fix a spring that is too soft: winding it in to stop the bike squatting two-up also uses up the travel, so the shock rides high, harsh and out of its working range. A correctly rated spring gets the sag right at the weight you actually ride at.

    Trade-off: Firmer than stock when you ride solo, so it is the wrong call if two-up is occasional.

    Check before you order

    • Combined rider, pillion and luggage weight — the spring is chosen from that number, so measure it
    • Whether your shock's spring is replaceable at all, or the whole unit has to go
    • Electronic or semi-active suspension: check the kit keeps the dash happy

  • Sintered pads and braided lines

    Tyres, wheels & brakes$80–$300 · ~2 h to fit

    Pads to a spec chosen for the use, stainless braided hoses and fresh fluid.

    Braided lines take the sponge out of a long front line, and fresh fluid does more than either. On a bike carrying luggage or a pillion the stock pad compound is usually the weak link, not the caliper.

    Check before you order

    • Pad compound suits the disc: some sintered compounds chew cast-iron and older discs
    • Hose lengths for your bar and mudguard setup, and whether ABS lines are separate
    • Off-road: softer pads bite better cold and wet, but glaze under sustained downhill braking

  • Taller seat, peg lowering and a bar riser stack

    Ergonomics & comfort$200–$700 · ~3 h to fit

    The three dimensions that make a bike fit a tall rider, changed together: a taller or re-foamed seat, brackets that drop the pegs 25–40 mm, and enough bar rise to stand the torso up.

    A tall rider on a stock bike is folded up, which puts the weight on the tailbone and the knees into the tank. Changing one dimension alone usually makes it worse: a taller seat without lower pegs closes the knee angle further.

    Trade-off: Every millimetre down at the pegs is a millimetre of ground clearance, and a taller seat makes the bike harder to hold at a stop.

    Check before you order

    • Inseam and torso length, and which of the three actually pinches — knees, hips or shoulders
    • Lowered pegs cost cornering and off-road clearance, and move the brake and gear levers with them
    • Standing height changes reach to the bars and the screen line for wind

  • Reshaped or aftermarket seat

    Ergonomics & comfort$180–$600 · ~1 h to fit

    A wider, flatter foam of the right density — either a replacement seat or your own pan re-foamed and re-covered.

    Numbness at 90 minutes is the most common reason a touring day ends early, and it is a foam-density problem, not a padding-thickness problem. Re-foaming your own pan also lets you take height out for a shorter inseam, or add it for a taller one.

    • Seat height change in both directions — say which way you want it
    • Off-road: a flat seat you can move around on beats a plush bucket that pins you in place
    • Heated seat elements need a switched, fused circuit

  • Top box on a plate

    Luggage & load carrying$200–$700 · ~1 h to fit

    A lockable 30–50 litre case on a mounting plate over a subframe-mounted rack.

    Where a helmet and a shop run live, and the only luggage most commuters need.

    Trade-off: Raises the centre of gravity at the worst possible point.

    • Rack load rating including the case's own weight
    • A big box far back is the classic cause of high-speed weave — keep the load light

  • Taller gearing for cruising

    Fuel range$70–$220 · ~2 h to fit

    One or two teeth more on the countershaft sprocket, or fewer on the rear, with a chain to match.

    Drops highway revs on a bike geared for the trail, which is worth real fuel economy, less vibration and a longer engine life on a big single.

    Trade-off: Loses low-speed tractability and clutch life in technical riding.

    Check before you order

    • Chain length and adjuster range — a bigger front sprocket may need a longer chain
    • Clearance between a bigger countershaft sprocket and the case or chain guide
    • Speedometer error where the sensor reads the front sprocket or gearbox

  • LED headlight bulb or unit

    Lighting & visibility$80–$400 · ~1 h to fit

    A quality LED retrofit in the stock reflector, or a complete LED projector unit.

    Older halogen units are the reason night riding feels like guessing. Done properly, this doubles usable light without touching the charging system.

    • Reflector geometry: a cheap LED in a halogen reflector scatters light and blinds oncoming traffic
    • Beam pattern must keep a legal cut-off in your market
    • Some bikes need a decoder to stop a bulb-out warning or flicker

  • Better battery, or lithium

    Electrics & charging$100–$450 · ~1 h to fit

    A quality AGM in the stock size, or a lithium-iron pack where weight matters, plus a matching charger.

    Most no-start faults are a tired battery, and a lithium pack saves 2–4 kg on a dirt bike. AGM is the better answer for anything that sits in the cold.

    • Lithium needs a compatible charger and dislikes cold cranking — a bad choice for a winter commuter
    • Case size and terminal orientation in the stock tray, and vibration padding
    • Whether the bike's regulator is kind to lithium chemistry

  • Heated-gear circuit

    A dedicated fused feed and controller for a heated jacket liner or trousers.

    Heated clothing works on your core rather than your hands, and it is the difference between riding through winter and parking the bike.

    • Alternator surplus at commuting revs, not at 6,000 rpm
    • Controller with a low-voltage cut-out and a proper connector at the seat edge

  • Quality chain and sprocket set

    Reliability & longevity$150–$400 · ~3 h to fit

    An X- or Z-ring chain and a steel rear sprocket, replaced as a set with the front.

    A worn chain destroys new sprockets in a weekend, and a chain that snaps at speed can take the cases or the rear wheel with it. Steel rear sprockets last several times as long as alloy ones off-road.

  • Wheel, linkage and steering bearings

    Reliability & longevity$60–$300 · ~4 h to fit

    Wheel bearings, linkage and swingarm bearings, steering-head races and the seals that keep water out of all of them.

    Water-ingested bearings are the standard fate of a bike that gets washed and ridden in the wet, and they fail as vagueness in the handling long before they fail loudly.

    Check before you order

    • Check before replacing: a dial gauge or a levered wheel tells you which are actually gone
    • Linkage bearings on a dirt bike need grease every season, not replacement

  • Fuel pump, filter and injector service

    Reliability & longevity$80–$400 · ~3 h to fit

    In-tank filter and pump strainer, injector clean, and the tank breather and vent lines checked.

    A blocked in-tank strainer is the classic cause of a bike that runs fine cold and dies hot, and a kinked tank breather will stop a bike dead and leave no trace.

    Check before you order

    • Whether the filter is a serviceable part or comes only as a pump assembly
    • Ethanol-degraded hoses on anything over about ten years old

  • Loom and connector service

    Reliability & longevity$15–$120 · ~4 h to fit

    Every connector opened, cleaned, greased with dielectric grease and re-seated, with chafe points taped and rerouted.

    Intermittent electrical faults are almost always a green connector or a wire rubbed through on a frame tube, not a failed component. This is a free afternoon that prevents the hardest kind of roadside diagnosis.

    • Photograph the routing before you unplug anything
    • Sidestand, kill and neutral switches first — the usual suspects

  • ECU flash or fuel controller

    Power & fuelling$200–$800 · ~2 h to fit

    A remapped ECU, or an inline fuel controller and an O2 eliminator where flashing is not available.

    Most modern bikes are lean and abrupt at small throttle openings to pass emissions tests. Fixing the fuelling removes the snatch and the surging — a bigger real-world gain than peak power.

    Trade-off: Voids the powertrain warranty on most bikes and can fail an emissions inspection.

    Check before you order

    • Whether your ECU can be flashed at all, or only piggybacked
    • Emissions legality and warranty in your market
    • A map matched to your exhaust and filter, not a generic file

  • Exhaust plus matching fuelling

    Power & fuelling$300–$1.4k · ~3 h to fit

    A slip-on or full system, fitted together with the fuelling change it requires.

    The honest reasons are weight — a full system can save 5 kg high on the bike — and a cracked or rotten original. Power is a side effect and rarely the biggest one.

    Trade-off: Noise, legality, warranty and resale, and a full system on a modern bike often needs an O2 workaround.

    • Noise limits and homologation stamps where you ride, and at track days
    • A slip-on without a fuelling change usually makes a lean bike leaner
    • Pannier and crash-bar clearance around a bigger can

Stage 3Specialist

Workshop work, custom parts or irreversible modification. Worth it only once stages 1 and 2 are done and the bike is still the limit.

  • Charging system upgrade or service

    Electrics & charging$150–$600 · ~3 h to fit

    A MOSFET regulator/rectifier, connector renewal, and a stator test — or a higher-output stator where one exists.

    Older bikes with a shunt regulator cook their stators, and the failure is a roadside one. If you have added lights and heated kit, the charging system is now the limiting component.

    Check before you order

    • Measure output before spending: a weak stator and a dead regulator look identical from the saddle
    • Connector quality is usually the real fault — the ring terminals and spades, not the parts
