Suspension & handling

The cheapest real improvement on almost any bike, because almost every bike is sprung for a rider who is not you.

The question to answer first: Does the bike wallow, dive, kick or run out of travel?

Stage 1Before your next ride

Cheap, reversible, mostly hand tools. Do all of these before spending on anything in stage 2; several of them are free.

  • Set rider sag and preload for your weight

    $0–$40 · ~1 h to fit

    A tape measure, a helper and the preload adjusters the bike already has.

    Bikes are sprung for a nominal 75–80 kg rider in nothing but leathers. Set sag first and half the complaints about a bike diving, wallowing or running out of travel go away for free — and you learn whether the springs are actually wrong before you buy any.

    • Static and rider sag targets from the service manual, not a forum
    • How much preload range is left before the adjuster bottoms out
    • Whether the shock has a remote hydraulic adjuster (loaded settings become a 10-second job)

Stage 2The money upgrades

Where the bike actually changes character. Bigger spend, still a home-garage job on most bikes.

  • Fork springs matched to your weight, with fresh oil

    $150–$400 · ~3 h to fit

    Straight-rate springs chosen for rider plus kit weight, new fork oil and seals while it is apart.

    Once preload is out of range, springs are the fix. Fork oil is a service item that almost nobody changes: ten-year-old oil is why the front end feels harsh and vague at the same time.

    • Rider weight in full kit, and whether you ride loaded or two-up
    • Spring rate and free length for your exact fork, which varies within a model range
    • Cartridge or damper-rod forks — damper-rod legs also want an oil-weight change

  • Shock service and revalve

    $300–$900 · ~3 h to fit

    Strip, reseal and revalve the existing shock, with a spring matched to your weight.

    Cheaper than a replacement shock and usually the bigger gain, because valving — not the spring — is what makes a stock shock harsh on small hits and hopeless on big ones. Nitrogen shocks need doing every 30–50 hours off-road; almost nobody does.

    Check before you order

    • Whether the shock is rebuildable at all — sealed units on cheaper bikes are not
    • Turnaround time: the bike is off the road while it is away
    • Rider weight, luggage weight and the surface you actually ride, given to the tuner

  • Rear spring rated for the weight you actually carry

    $120–$320 · ~3 h to fit

    A stiffer main spring on the existing shock, chosen for rider plus pillion plus luggage rather than for the solo rider the factory assumed.

    Preload alone cannot fix a spring that is too soft: winding it in to stop the bike squatting two-up also uses up the travel, so the shock rides high, harsh and out of its working range. A correctly rated spring gets the sag right at the weight you actually ride at.

    Trade-off: Firmer than stock when you ride solo, so it is the wrong call if two-up is occasional.

    Check before you order

    • Combined rider, pillion and luggage weight — the spring is chosen from that number, so measure it
    • Whether your shock's spring is replaceable at all, or the whole unit has to go
    • Electronic or semi-active suspension: check the kit keeps the dash happy

  • Lowering kit or reshaped low seat

    $80–$350 · ~3 h to fit

    Shorter shock linkage or dogbones, forks pushed up through the clamps, and a lower side stand — or a reshaped seat, which lowers the rider without touching the chassis.

    Getting a foot down changes what you dare ride. A confident rider on a lowered bike is faster and safer than a nervous one on a tall bike.

    Trade-off: Costs ground clearance and cornering clearance, and can make the shock ramp up harshly.

    Check before you order

    • Ground clearance and suspension travel lost — the reason to try a seat first
    • Side-stand and centre-stand length: a lowered bike on a stock stand stands dangerously upright
    • Whether the linkage change makes the shock progressive in the wrong direction

Stage 3Specialist

Workshop work, custom parts or irreversible modification. Worth it only once stages 1 and 2 are done and the bike is still the limit.

  • Drop-in fork cartridge kit

    $700–$1.5k · ~4 h to fit

    Complete replacement damping cartridges in the stock outer tubes, with matched springs.

    The end of the front-end road: proper compression and rebound damping with real adjustment. Transforms a bike whose forks were built to a price, which is most bikes under $12,000.

    Trade-off: Rarely recovered at resale, and overkill if the bike is ridden gently on tarmac.

    • Kits are fork-specific by model year — confirm yours, not the range
    • Whether the stock forks are worth keeping (bent tubes or pitted chrome make this money wasted)

  • Aftermarket shock with hydraulic preload

    $900–$2k · ~3 h to fit

    A purpose-built replacement shock, usually with remote hydraulic preload and rebound adjustment.

    On a heavy bike that is ridden solo one week and two-up with panniers the next, being able to dial in preload from the saddle is the difference between one setup that is wrong twice and two that are right.

    • Electronic suspension: replacing a semi-active shock can throw dash errors unless the kit handles the CAN signal
    • Ride-height change and what it does to the side stand and centre stand

  • Steering damper

    $250–$700 · ~2 h to fit

    A rotary or linear damper on the top clamp or frame, resisting fast bar movement only.

    Stops rock and rut deflection becoming a tank-slapper at speed on rough ground, and takes a lot of the fatigue out of a fast gravel road.

    • Mount clearance against the tank, bars and any GPS bracket
    • Bar-mounted units raise the bars — check reach before you commit
