Power for what you have bolted on, and a charging system that can still start the bike after a cold night.
The question to answer first: Is the electrical system carrying more than it was designed for?
Stage 1 — Before your next ride
Cheap, reversible, mostly hand tools. Do all of these before spending on anything in stage 2; several of them are free.
Fused accessory block with USB

One place to hang lights, heated kit, a GPS and a compressor, each individually fused, nothing draining the battery with the key out, and no more spliced-into-the-tail-light wiring.

- — A dry mounting spot with strain-relieved wiring away from the steering head
- — Trigger the relay from a low-current circuit, not the headlight feed

Voltmeter and a tender lead
$20–$90 · ~1 h to fitA dash or bar voltmeter, plus a permanently fitted pigtail for a smart charger.
A charging fault shows up as a falling voltage days before it strands you, and a bike that lives outside stays healthy on a tender for the price of one battery.

Navigation mount and powered cradle
$40–$200 · ~1 h to fitA vibration-damped mount on the bar clamp or a frame bracket, with a switched, fused power lead.
Phones die from vibration on a bar clamp, and a phone on a dying battery is a navigation failure at the worst moment.
Check before you order
- — Mount off the bar clamp or a solid bracket, not mid-bar, and damped on a single-cylinder bike
- — It must not obstruct the dash or the bars at full lock

Stage 2 — The money upgrades
Where the bike actually changes character. Bigger spend, still a home-garage job on most bikes.
Better battery, or lithium
$100–$450 · ~1 h to fitA quality AGM in the stock size, or a lithium-iron pack where weight matters, plus a matching charger.
Most no-start faults are a tired battery, and a lithium pack saves 2–4 kg on a dirt bike. AGM is the better answer for anything that sits in the cold.

- — Lithium needs a compatible charger and dislikes cold cranking — a bad choice for a winter commuter
- — Case size and terminal orientation in the stock tray, and vibration padding
- — Whether the bike's regulator is kind to lithium chemistry

Heated-gear circuit
$60–$250 · ~1 h to fitA dedicated fused feed and controller for a heated jacket liner or trousers.
Heated clothing works on your core rather than your hands, and it is the difference between riding through winter and parking the bike.

- — Alternator surplus at commuting revs, not at 6,000 rpm
- — Controller with a low-voltage cut-out and a proper connector at the seat edge

Stage 3 — Specialist
Workshop work, custom parts or irreversible modification. Worth it only once stages 1 and 2 are done and the bike is still the limit.
Charging system upgrade or service
$150–$600 · ~3 h to fitA MOSFET regulator/rectifier, connector renewal, and a stator test — or a higher-output stator where one exists.
Older bikes with a shunt regulator cook their stators, and the failure is a roadside one. If you have added lights and heated kit, the charging system is now the limiting component.
Check before you order
- — Measure output before spending: a weak stator and a dead regulator look identical from the saddle
- — Connector quality is usually the real fault — the ring terminals and spades, not the parts
