Diagnose a bike that suddenly won't start
Most 'dead bike' failures are a fuse, a connector or a side-stand switch, and all three are roadside fixable.
What you need
- — Spare fuses in every rating your bike uses
- — Multimeter (or a test lamp)
- — Wire, crimps, electrical tape
- — Your bike's fuse box layout
Steps
- 01Check the obvious kill conditions first: kill switch, side stand down, in gear, clutch not pulled, fuel cut.
- 02Check the main and ignition fuses. A blown fuse looks exactly like a dead battery from the saddle.
- 03Measure battery voltage: below ~12.2 V resting means a discharged or failing battery; below 10 V under crank confirms it.
- 04Wiggle-test the connectors around the ignition switch, side-stand switch and CDI/ECU — vibration backs them out and chafes looms at the steering head.
- 05If a switch is confirmed dead, bypass it temporarily with a short jumper wire, and tape it up so it can't short.
- 06If charging voltage is under ~13.5 V at 3000 rpm with the bike running, suspect the regulator/rectifier and plan around a battery that will not recharge.
Watch out
- — Never bypass a fuse with wire or foil — you're replacing a cheap fuse with a wiring-loom fire.
- — Only bypass a safety interlock (side stand, clutch) to get home, and restore it afterwards.
